PLG Section: Product & problem overview

Before starting the work on actual partnership strategy, let's understand the product very deeply, and the problem you're looking to solve using partnerships. See, no partnership is not going to be fruitful if it doesn't help your product, or your users. Hence, it's important to understand the product and the problem before moving forward.

  1. Understanding the product
  2. Litmus test to understand if partnerships are the right channel for you
  3. Identify the right type of partnership
  4. Reaching out to potential partners
  5. Getting stakeholder buy-in
  6. Planning the GTM

Product breakdown

Let's start by breaking down the product that you're building a partnership strategy for. This will lay the ground for everything that follows.

To do this, answer the following questions in as much depth as possible:

  1. Define the mission statement of your product.
  2. Identify Ideal Customer Profiles (ICPs).
  3. Outline the Jobs-To-Be-Done (JTBD) for your ICPs.
  4. Establish key value propositions and differentiators for your product.

Identify the problem to solve

Next, identify the core problem you're looking to solve via partnerships. Partnerships can either solve a business or a user problem. The strategy and approach towards building partnerships will vary a lot depending on the type of problem you're trying to solve.

The type of problem to be solved will be decided in an org level. Hence, here you might want to speak to your colleagues/peers to understand which problems aligns the best with business goals.

If you're looking to solve a business problem, answer the following questions along with a justification:

  • Are you looking to onboard more customers? (Acquisition)
  • Are you aiming to improve engagement and retention rates?
  • Do you need to drive additional revenue through monetisation strategies?

If you're looking to solve a user problem, answer these questions:

  • What is the user trying to achieve that they currently struggle with?
  • What data or insights do you have that highlight this problem?
  • What is preventing your users from achieving their goals today?
  • What will be the impact on users if this issue is resolved?

The more in-depth your answers are, the more clarity you'll have on what needs to be achieved going forward.
